Fine coal is generally less than 0.5 mm and greater than 150 microns,whereas ultra-fine coal is less than 150 microns, normally in the form of a slurry, (Hand, 2000). Around 21-24%of the 312 Mtpa of the ROM coal in South Africa in 2007 was reported as coal discards of which 4-6% was in theform of ultra-fine slurry (Coaltech, 2011).
